Skunk got your dog? Don't get them wet!

Few things are as shocking and unpleasant as discovering your dog has been sprayed by a skunk. The strong, lingering odor can be overwhelming and difficult to remove. Knowing what to do immediately after this happens can save you time, reduce stress, and help your dog feel comfortable again. This guide walks you through practical, effective steps to handle the situation and get your dog back to normal as quickly as possible.

Recognize the Signs Your Dog Has Been Sprayed

Skunk spray has a very distinct, pungent smell that is hard to miss. If your dog suddenly smells like rotten eggs or burnt rubber, it’s a clear sign they have been sprayed. Other signs include:

  • Pawing at the face or eyes due to irritation

  • Red or watery eyes

  • Shaking their body repeatedly

  • Avoiding people or hiding

If you notice these signs, act quickly to minimize the odor and discomfort.

Keep Your Dog Outside or in a Well-Ventilated Area

Skunk spray can easily spread inside your home. Before you start cleaning your dog, take them outside, to a garage, or laundry room/bathroom with good ventilation. This prevents the smell from lingering indoors and makes cleanup easier.

Protect Yourself Before Cleaning

Skunk spray can irritate your skin and eyes. Wear old clothes, rubber gloves, and avoid touching your face during the cleaning process. Keep your dog calm and restrained gently to avoid scratches or bites.

CALL THE GROOMER!

If they cannot get you in, you can prepare a Homemade Skunk Odor Removal Solution

A widely recommended homemade solution uses common household ingredients that can neutralize the smell:

  • 1 quart (4 cups) of 3% hydrogen peroxide

  • 1/4 cup of baking soda

  • 1 teaspoon of liquid dish soap (preferably a mild, grease-cutting type)

Important: Mix this solution fresh and use it immediately. Do not store it in a closed container, as it can build up pressure and explode.

How to Wash Your Dog Safely

  1. Apply the homemade solution carefully, avoiding the eyes, ears, and mouth.

  2. Rub the solution into the fur gently but thoroughly, especially around the face, neck, and tail where spray is most common.

  3. Let it sit for 5 minutes but do not leave it on too long to avoid skin irritation.

  4. Rinse your dog completely with lukewarm water.

  5. Repeat the wash if the smell persists, but avoid over-washing to protect your dog’s skin.

Clean Your Dog’s Eyes and Face Carefully

Skunk spray can irritate your dog’s eyes and face. Use a damp cloth with plain water or saline solution to gently wipe the eyes and face (do NOT use contact solution). Avoid using the homemade solution near the eyes. If your dog’s eyes remain red or irritated, contact your veterinarian.

Dry Your Dog and Monitor for Reactions

After rinsing, dry your dog with towels or a blow dryer on a low setting. Keep your dog warm and comfortable. Watch for any signs of allergic reaction or skin irritation such as redness, swelling, or excessive scratching. If these occur, seek veterinary advice promptly.

Clean Your Dog’s Bedding and Surroundings

Skunk odor can cling to your dog’s bedding, collar, and toys. Wash these items with regular detergent and add a cup of baking soda to help neutralize the smell. Clean the areas where your dog spends time to prevent the odor from returning.

Prevent Future Skunk Encounters

To reduce the chances of your dog getting sprayed again:

  • Avoid walking your dog in areas known for skunk activity, especially at dawn or dusk.

  • Keep your yard well-lit and free of food scraps or garbage that attract skunks.

  • Use motion-activated lights or sprinklers to deter skunks from your property.

When to Contact a Veterinarian

If your dog shows signs of severe eye irritation, difficulty breathing, vomiting, or unusual behavior after being sprayed, contact your veterinarian immediately. Skunk spray can sometimes cause more serious health issues that require professional care.
